Description
Crocosmia masoniorum is a corm-forming perennial (often sold as “bulbs”) grown for its upright sprays of vivid orange to orange-red tubular flowers from midsummer onwards. It adds height and movement to borders with narrow, sword-like foliage and arching flower stems. A great choice for sunny borders, gravel-style planting, and large patio containers with free-draining compost. Once established, it can return each year and gradually clump up. For best flowering, plant in full sun (it will also tolerate partial shade) and avoid winter waterlogging. Flowering time and height can vary slightly with weather, soil and planting position.
Also known as (common/other names):
Giant montbretia • Montbretia • Crocosmia • Swan crocosmia • Coppertips • Falling stars • (also sometimes listed as “Crocosmia masonorum”)
Botanical synonym sometimes seen: Tritonia masoniorum

- Plant corms about 8–10cm deep, spaced roughly 10–15cm apart.
- Water after planting; then keep lightly moist while establishing (do not waterlog).
- After flowering, allow foliage to die back naturally to feed next year’s corms.
- If clumps become crowded, lift and divide in spring to maintain vigour.
Good to know
- The genus name “Crocosmia” relates to a saffron-like scent released when dried flowers are dipped in water.
- Crocosmia grows from corms (often called bulbs) and forms offsets over time.
- This plant can spread and become a nuisance if not managed—dividing clumps helps keep it under control.
- Planting in groups/drifts gives a much stronger border effect than single corms.
